Union Management Meetings (UMM’s)

UMM’s are meetings between OCPS managers and job family employees and V.P.’s for the purpose of discussing concerns which could improve the quality of work, such as training programs. The Paras met with district managers on November 5, 2003. Present were Eduarda Crain, Organizational Consultant; Frances Barker, Vice President for Paraprofessionals; Elowes Turner, Para; Cindy Gunter, Para; John Hawco, Employee Relations; Kathy Santucci, Remedial Instructor for the Para Academy; and Geneva Gripper, Human Resources.
• 29 schools last year were Title 1; this year there are 45 schools.
• There are approximately 1,600 Paraprofessionals in the County.
• The Title 1 Paraprofessional Academy is only offered to Title 1 paraprofessionals at this time. May expand in the future.
• The Title 1 Academy has been changed from three days to four.
• Participants will be assessed in reading, writing and math.
• The district pays for all Title 1 Paraprofessionals to attend the Academy and to take the ETS test for Title 1 certification.
Kathy S. talked of the need for all Paraprofessionals to have access to OCPS computers and email as registration for the Academy will take place on-line beginning in January at signmeup.ocps.net.
The V.P. and other paras present had a concern as not all paras are given access to computers at work sites. There was also a concern about getting staff development points for attending the Academy. Teachers use the points for recertification but classified employees can’t use the points for anything job-related.
